The public transport system in Cape Town

One of the scariest parts of travelling to another city, especially one as highly populated as Cape Town, is figuring out how to get around. Transport is something we all tend to take for granted every day, and the moment we find ourselves away from our own transport systems, we feel useless and agitated. Having to rely on others for lifts to and from destinations is not always a good idea, as schedules can often clash, causing great inconvenience. Fear not. We have put together a list of transportation options in the Mother City, all in the hope of making the prospect of visiting a new place a little easier to deal with.

The public transport system in Cape Town is probably one of the best in the country. Cabs, minibuses, trains and buses run regularly throughout the city, reaching most areas.  Public transport plays an invaluable part of the city’s day to day workings, ensuring that almost four million people are able to get to work, school, or any other activities that they may need to partake in on a regular basis. The system is designed to make getting around Cape Town as easy, hassle-fee and as cost effective as possible.

Train lines run to all suburban areas, and extend as far as the Winelands, an area just outside of the city, while minibus taxis can be hailed from almost anywhere at any time of the day. Cabs can often be seen lined along the streets of the most popular tourist sites in the city. Alternatively, contact numbers for cab companies are readily available from most hotels, hostels, bars and shops. For a scenic route around Cape Town, busses are accessible from the stops stationed frequently along big roads in each area. The MyCiti Bus initiative, a rapid transport option, has just been launched in the CBD as well, making it possible for commuters to get to and from the city centre and the airport, as well as a number of other areas within the city. Over the next few years, the MyCiti bus route will be extended to cover the whole of Cape Town.

For those who prefer to drive themselves around, services such as Cape Town airport car hire are available as well. If a roadtrip is on the cards, it is possible to drive the hired car from the Western Cape to the Johannesburg airport car hire and then fly back to avoid driving the considerably long route twice.

Whatever preference visitors to Cape Town have, there is an appropriate transport solution for whichever activity needs to be completed.
